ASTUNGKARA WAY: ON A MISSION TO REGENERATE BALI’S SOILS AND ECOSYSTEMS

Eliminate chemical farming in Bali one farmer and one rice paddy at a time.

This week, we are hosting Astungkara Way, a not-for-profit organization on a mission to bring Balinese youth back to farming their lands, as a compelling alternative to tourism work, and thus contributing to regenerate Bali’s ecosystem, build Farming Learning Centers to share climate change mitigating farming technique and reconnect humans to the ancestral lands of Bali with a coast-to-coast walking trail.

What you’ll learn:
The challenges Balinese farmers need to overcome to transition to chemical-free farming, the mission to get Bali to recognise for a regenerative movement that could reach from local to global, forming the next generation of Balinese farmers to steward their ancestral lands, the trails that reconnect humans to nature and the source of their food.

About the Speaker:
Tim Fijal is a regenerative farmer, environmentalist, and pilgrim. He moved with his family from Vancouver, Canada to Bali in 2011 for his children to attend Green School. While working as the Head of Admissions for Green School, Tim founded Kul Kul Connection, a community integration initiative aimed at making the international school relevant and valuable to the local community in which it is situated. Wanting to draw more attention to the sustainable lifestyles and traditional practices of the local community, he forged a partnership with local farmers near Green School and began facilitating courses in the paddies allowing internationals to experience the full rice cycle and to connect meaningfully with local people. Deeply moved by his interactions with rice farmers and the challenges they are facing, he left Green School at the onset of the pandemic and founded Astungkara Way. Tim and his team of dedicated young agriculturalists are champions for regenerative farming and local youth engagement in agriculture. With Astungkara Way, they are building an island-wide network of farmers taking regenerative action and linking them together through a coast-to-coast pilgrimage called the Astungkara Trail. Tim’s team sees this effort as an essential and timely local-to-global movement that reconnects humans with nature and draws them closer to the source of their food.
